Brad has had an idea for several months now...
I should start by saying that his heart rate increases every time we pass a Shell gas station here. As he approaches the station from afar, he mistakenly detects their red and yellow "enter" sign as the McDonalds drive-thru arrow. That can only mean that a large diet coke is within reach! Psych!
Back to the idea...as a teenager, Brad used to love McDonald's apple turnovers. He queried two of the women in our branch about using a fruit filling inside the samosas they make, rather than the usual vegetables or meat. Blasphemy! Never been heard of.
Samosas are a culinary item here...made with a dough which is similar to pie crust...filled with meat or vegetables, and then deep-fried. They sell for 100-200 shillings in many of the kiosks (6-12 cents). With the memory of McDonalds' apple turnovers in his grasp, Brad suggested to Esther and Felistus that they substitute a sweet fruit inside the dough.
Last week, we made it happen. Several women in the branch gathered together. Felistus made the "paper" (crust), we made the fruit fillings, we fried them in oil over a kerosene cooker, then dusted them with icing sugar (powdered sugar). Pineapple or banana got the top votes. The experiment was deemed a success by all the taste testers, and Brad went on to make 2 dozen more the next day in our flat!

Yes! Just like McDonald's apple turnovers!

Yum! I bet they will remember you guys forever for that idea.
Frank, the boys and I went to Florida with Gma Pat last week. It was lots of fun, Lucas and Owen got her to go on roller coasters with them. She was a trouper, and kept up with us.
I think this is how you really convert people-one apple turnover at a time. Who wouldn't think that fruit would taste better than meat and vegetables. I can see it now-you'll go back to Uganda after your mission and open a stand on the corner and make millions. Honestly, the stove in the middle of the floor in your apartment didn't look too safe. But, when there's a will, there's a way! Keep spreading all your love and apple goodness!
